Meeting Minutes:

Topic 1: George gives us an elections update

• ARC members are being chosen and organized
• Elections are underway
• The tenured faculty has a responsibility to suggest two names for the candidate’s ARC (as stated in the CBA Article 8 CB2a)
• There was a precedent set that the union president would choose and be part of that process, but that’s not in the CBA

Topic 2: Trevor Goes to Budget Town and Comes Back with an Update

• Trevor would like to propose that we approved this budget today 💵

• George seconds to approve the budget
• Unanimous votes to approve the budget with raised hands and thumbs up

• Our union dues have gone up because it’s a percentage of our salary and we recently got cost of living increases (COLA)
• The college retroactively paid us and the budget needs to be adjusted for that
• We don’t spend the Education/Convention or Organizing budgets since not many of us go to the prof development activities for the union (i.e. the Powerful Locals training)         

• Do the CBA sessions count towards training?
• We have three of the CBA education sessions planned
• George chimes in and says it’s more about educating and DuValle agrees
• Trevor moves the 250$ to the Education section of the budget
• Kristine suggests moving 500$ from the organizing to the education budget
• The red reserve amount is what we expected to overspend. Our budget actuals ended up not being overspent.
• Last year we decided to budget for more spending than we were getting from dues; we needed the money to pay people during the bargaining process (which went on a lot longer than it was expected)

• Trevor has budgeted for those adjuncts who are on the eBoard and considers that we may have others join, putting aside money for that
• When members ask where their dues are going, having this budget is a good way to show our accountability of their dues. The budget is easy to share from the Google Drive or from the SCCFT1950 website

Topic 3: Trevor Gives a Bargaining update

• Club advisor payment issues
• Nursing issues are being discussed
• Trevor is planning to be on sabbatical soon and is tying up loose ends with these issues

Topic 3: Investigative Report with Deans

• Dean has formally apologized for an issue that has happened
• DuValle has given a template for investigative report

Topic 4: Service to the College Issue

• The approach is to NOT force people into roles that don’t suit them
• We do have ARC roles that need to be filled
• DuValle shares this document with background and context

• We ask that you review and comment on this document

• We look at the document that DuValle shared

• Trevor points out that the exact formula is (0.264 = 80% of 1/3 annual workload)
• Caitlan brings up the possibility that the document suggests “some faculty aren’t contributing” might be feeding into a negative narrative that administrators are perpetuating

• Sarah may be a good person to help us rephrase
• Dutch suggests: “Suggested revision: Service is not always distributed equitably across campus, which increases the burden on others who often serve in ways that aren’t sustainable.”
• Trevor suggests: “Service work is not always distributed equitably across campus; this causes difficulty for mutual accountability for upholding contractual expectations.”

• Ben Weng VP of Instruction wanted to set up a tiered system for committees and councils

• Determine how much time each committee meets plus the work done outside the meeting
• Ben suggests: “If we serve on two ARCs, we don’t have to track our service work” (an idea he’s rolling around⚽)

• Wendy brings up the possibility that faculty who work over the 100% load being excused from service work

• Trevor says that you don’t get excused even if you have a high teaching load
• Automotive may have a special situation and are never on committees at the college because they’re already doing a ton of service work within their own role
• Kristine points out that service work is within our salary payment (our 20% commitment to service work as included in our responsibility) and service work doesn’t count as the special work that gets the faculty hourly rate

• Dutch points out that administrators may be mistaking the faculty work as things that are outside of our responsibilities.
• Kristine says that the admin perspective is that the ARCs aren’t being filled
• In the past faculty have had the freedom to choose a committee that they feel passionate about and direct their effort into things they care about

• DuValle shares “They used to publish a list of all the committees yearly, and faculty were asked to volunteer. The time commitment was about how often they meet, not how many hours we get credit for. It will never be equitable. There will also be faculty who will not do their fair share. Brainstorming possible ideas and getting ideas from our members would help. We do have to fill the ARCs. Every member of the tenured faculty needs to be on an ARC.”

• Trevor brings up that there’s an electoral process to place faculty on the ARCs

• Our CBA doesn’t say whether the faculty can refuse
• DuValle says we are contractually required to be on an ARC, so they can refuse one ARC but have to serve on another
• Trevor brings up that it’s helpful when the administration makes it easier on those who commit more. Having us track and report our hours makes it harder to overcommit. It punishes the people who work harder.
• Nov 8 is the plan for the new ARC training, but we don’t have all the ARCs filled

Topic 5: Priority Associates Aren’t getting Assigned Class Load in a Timely Manner

• Winter 2025 Continuing Student Registration Begins: November 18th, 2024

• New Student Registration Begins: November 25th, 2024

• George agrees to send an email to his dean, our new VP of Instruction, and wants to represent the union and a priority associate to remind the administration that our adjuncts need to given their assignments in a prompt manner
