- AFT-WA updates
- Resources for immigration defense
- Lobby day: https://leadernet.aft.org/webform/aft-washington-lobby-day-2025
- Union table–Day of Learning (May 2nd)
- Snow day messaging concerns:
- Equity issues→ access to course materials if the course is normally in-person and/or hybrid. Not all students have a computer–students had trouble accessing Canvas on phones
- Given a lot of different choices to conduct class but nothing definite–inconsistent and ambiguous messaging
- Good that we had advanced notice
- Confusion over “optional before 10am”
- College’s approach to snow day instructions and other emergency situations like ‘sick days’ is different–more ambiguity for snow day instructions
- Ask for clarity from college –relate to ‘sick day’ scenarios
- Listen to colleagues over their choices during snow day→ can file a grievance if anyone is getting punished for the instruction mode choice.
- Ask for ‘Guide to Class Cancellation or Move to Remote Instruction’ to provide feedback and ask for clarity (ask them to share ahead of time).
- If it’s known/expected that snow is coming–send out messaging the week before
- Share policies with students on Canvas etc.
- ACTION: Send out survey to instructors to then share with admin
- ACTION: Kristine will ask about updated policy and when it’s coming out
- College refuses request for a mediator between a faculty and a dean
- Pushback from college→ they don’t want to set a precedent
- Check contract with faculty about mediation
- Encourage faculty to document every interaction with dean
- College request for processes that are not functional or missing in instruction (dean focus group with HR meetings to come)
- College wants to get suggestions for getting feedback
- College should give clear examples of types of ‘instruction processes’
- What does the college have in mind for what ‘is functional’?
- What does this relate to? Guided pathways? Accreditation?
- Strategic plan has a section on ‘processes’
- FPC workload discussion (clarity of roles between FPC and deans; clarity of work for the hours assigned and procedure for overload of hours; 5 departments indicated concerns with this from the FPC/Union meeting)
- Request from College for clarity around admin roles and titles
- Program viability: e.g. Clean energy
- Pay attention to evaluation criteria for viability
- Clean energy is going to get cut
- Did anyone see any criteria for program viability?→ none known
- Kristine will follow up with clean energy instructor
- Kristine will follow up on criteria
- Bargaining updates:
- Trevor sent Wendy and Emily stuff about nursing→ no new updates
- Advising-counseling matrix table update: Trevor sent Lucas an email→ asked if they are ready to bargain→ saw that Student Support Network Committee is dead (related to updating advising counseling matrix table)–limited reopener
- Kristine had a meeting with Ryan–what is happening with advising–update for what the intention is for advising moving forward
- This quarter or next quarter–update about advising
- Trevor suggested sending Ryan the proposed updates to advising-counseling matrix table
- Joyce and Aly top of the list as point people for this issue
- Treasurer updates:
- Retropay COLAs → college didn’t take union dues out ($10,000 not paid to union)
- Close to getting a process for it in November–but didn’t happen
- Important to get–pay per caps to AFT (we will owe slightly more to parent orgs–don’t want to pay out of reserves)
- Costs keep rising (dues stay the same)
- Budget:
- Trevor shared budget report. Things are on track.
- Spent a couple thousand dollars on legal fees
- No expenses from auditor yet (but coming soon)
- Expenses like paying for Kristine’s release time upcoming (budget allocated)
- Could use some money for union table at Day of Learning
- Any other updates?
- George B: three priority associates reached out.
- Filed a grievance against the college last weekend. Priority assoc. didn’t know that class assignment was 50%. Department made an error in assigning a credit load. Sent out on February 7th. No response yet.
- One priority associate was not compensated for 50% load (33.33%) they only received .17% compensation. Plans to talk to Veronica in HR about this.
- One priority associate 2018-2021– was an assoc. dean (left after 2021). Taught classes remotely in 2022 (had email access till Dec 2024). Lose priority assoc if refuse for 4 quarters. They had not formally resigned. Kristine and George going to have conversation with Veronica in HR about this.
- JUMC updates:
- Negotiations about ARC process
- Settlement
- Meetings about ARC process need to be scheduled
- Do we need to vote for a bargaining team? Or vote on participants.
- Emergent issues bargaining team?
- Kristine shared agenda for next JUMC meeting 2/14/25.
Meeting adjourned. 4:53
(Disclaimer: This message is for our immediate use. A more complete document on this topic will be created and reviewed with the Federation, Faculty Senate Council, and the College Administration before being publicly communicated to all.)
Dear Faculty,
I am writing to provide guidance on class cancellation and converting to remote. Thanks for helping the College maintain continuity of instruction and for support our students.
Cancellation
In the event of a class cancellation, the class will not meet, and no teaching or learning activities are required. Please update your Canvas sites to inform students that no activities will occur until classes resume. Also, address any concerns regarding changes in deadlines or exam dates.
Converting to Remote Instruction (for in-person class meetings)
This is different from cancellation. When converting to remote instruction, teaching and learning should be conducted remotely. You may provide students with materials such as readings, notes, video lessons, and other resources to facilitate remote learning. You may offer online office hours or conduct an online lesson. Regardless of your methods, please give grace to those who cannot participate.
In-Person Classes at Offsite Facilities
Programs that deliver lessons at facilities other than the main campus, such as Dental Hygiene and Nursing Clinical programs, should follow the status of those facilities. If an offsite facility remains open, the class will be held as scheduled. Please give grace to those who cannot attend.
Exams or Important Assignments Affected?
Instructors have the discretion to decide if an assignment or a scheduled exam should be cancelled, postponed, or taken in an alternative format. You may also adjust the grading scheme on the syllabus to accommodate these changes. Please promptly communicate any changes to the students via email and on Canvas.
Giving Grace
It is important to give students grace and provide support during natural disasters, weather-related emergencies, or other reasons that cause the College to switch to suspended or remote operations. Students are especially vulnerable during these times. Clear communication and flexibility can help students navigate these challenges more effectively.
Sincerely,
Ben Weng
